GAFAI Code of Conduct

1. Purpose and Scope

The Code of Conduct of the Global Alliance for Artificial Intelligence (GAFAI) establishes the ethical and behavioral standards expected of all members, staff, volunteers, partners, and participants in GAFAI activities. It applies to all interactions, both in-person and online, and covers the use of GAFAI’s digital platforms, events, research, and collaborations.

2. Core Principles

2.1 Integrity and Respect

·       Treat all individuals with dignity, fairness, and respect, regardless of background, role, or opinion.

·       Foster an inclusive environment that values diversity and promotes equal opportunity.

2.2 Excellence and Professionalism

·       Strive for the highest standards in research, education, and professional conduct.

·       Commit to continuous learning and responsible innovation[3].

2.3 Collaboration and Openness

·       Promote open collaboration across disciplines, sectors, and geographies.

·       Share knowledge, resources, and best practices to advance responsible AI[4][5].

2.4 Ethics and Accountability

·       Uphold ethical rigor in all AI-related activities, ensuring fairness, transparency, and accountability.

·       Take personal and organizational responsibility for the impact of AI systems and outputs.

2.5 Human Oversight

·       Ensure human oversight and governance in the development and deployment of AI.

·       Act in the public interest, correcting misinformation and preventing harm.

2.6 Privacy and Security

·       Respect the privacy and confidentiality of data and information.

·       Implement robust security measures to protect against unauthorized access or misuse.

2.7 Advocacy and Leadership

·       Advocate for responsible AI policies and standards.

·       Provide ethical leadership and guidance within the AI community.

3. Expected Behaviors

·       Obtain informed consent for data collection and use, ensuring clarity and transparency.

·       Communicate openly about the use and limitations of AI, including potential risks and biases.

·       Disclose any conflicts of interest and avoid situations that could compromise integrity or impartiality.

·       Support and mentor peers, especially those from underrepresented groups.

·       Report unethical behavior, violations, or security concerns through appropriate channels.

4. Prohibited Activities

·       Engaging in illegal, discriminatory, harassing, or abusive behavior[1].

·       Publishing or sharing false, misleading, or plagiarized information.

·       Misusing GAFAI resources, platforms, or confidential information for personal gain.

·       Violating privacy, data protection, or intellectual property rights.

·       Circumventing or undermining security measures of GAFAI systems.

5. AI-Specific Ethical Standards

·       Fairness: Strive to eliminate bias and ensure equitable outcomes in AI systems.

·       Transparency: Make AI processes and decisions as transparent and explainable as possible.

·       Accountability: Take responsibility for AI outcomes and enable mechanisms for redress.

·       Safety and Robustness: Design and deploy AI systems that are technically robust, safe, and secure.

·       Human-Centeredness: Ensure AI serves human values and societal benefit.

·       Sustainability: Promote environmentally responsible AI practices.

6. Enforcement and Consequences

·       Violations of the Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary action, including suspension or termination of membership, exclusion from events, or legal action where applicable.

·       GAFAI reserves the right to investigate reported incidents and take appropriate measures to protect its community and reputation.

7. Continuous Improvement

·       The Code of Conduct is a living document and will be reviewed regularly to reflect evolving best practices, legal requirements, and technological advancements[8].

·       Feedback from members and stakeholders is encouraged to ensure the Code remains relevant and effective.

8. Reporting and Support

·       Concerns or violations should be reported confidentially to GAFAI’s Ethics & Governance Committee or through designated reporting channels.

·       GAFAI is committed to protecting whistleblowers from retaliation and ensuring a fair investigation process.

By Joining and participating in GAFAI activities, all individuals and organizations agree to abide by this Code of Conduct and uphold the values and mission of the Alliance.
